The Better Outcomes in Mental Health Care (BOMH) Program improves community access to quality primary mental health care. The program was introduced in July 2001 in recognition of the important role of general practitioners (GPs) in managing mental health problems, and to enable team arrangements for referral of patients to allied health services. It also provided increased remuneration for GPs to work with patients in a way that encompasses assessment, plan and review.
The program is currently funded by the Hunter New England Central Coast Primary Health Network (HNECC PHN) until June 2017. Program delivery covers both Tier 1 (BOMH) and Tier 2 funding for specific groups of people. For Tier 1, there are several priority groups including Aboriginals & Torres Strait Islanders, Culturally & Linguistically Diverse (CALD), Carers and youth (12 – 24 years of age).
Financial disadvantage is a criteria for this program.
